Point Richmond ADU

Photography: Bénédicte Lasalle A new 600 square-foot ADU in Point Richmond's historic district. The original house on the property dates to the early 1900s, and sits toward the back of a wedge-shaped lot, with no room for anything in the rear yard. The new unit was built at the street, in front of the original house, which meant it would be the first thing people see and needed to fit the neighborhood.

We matched the roof pitch and siding of the original house so the two buildings appear cohesive from the street. The space left between them became a shared garden, and both houses open onto it. Inside, the ADU is open and modern. It has exposed beams, herringbone floors, a white oak and marble kitchen, and large sliders that open to the garden.
